Imaginiff . . .
|
Ok, this was prompted by some thinking I did about a game we played on Sunday when D came over. The game is called Imaginiff and this question really stuck out to me.
Now, "Imaginiff" you were living in a world where the seasons never change. Which season would you want to live in?
Why?
What would be the best thing about it?
Now think of some things that wouldn't be so good.
Tell me what you think. |

Do you mean like "Imaginiff you live in Texas?" :)
If I had a choice I'd like to be stuck in fall or winter.
I suppose that if I lived for long without spring or summer, I'd grow lonely for flowers and green growing things. I suppose . . . :)
~Cara
-
Probably Autumn - although I also like Summer. I love the colors and - as John said - the temperatures vary so you get some nice warm days and some nice cool ones. Although the one draw back to fall is: it's usually to cool to go to the beach!!!
ps. Who is Bree?
-
I feel an overpowering obligation to comment. I think the spring or summer. Winter is just too cold, and autumn always seemed like the end of something.
-
Ok, now it seems to be my turn to speak on the subject.
I think I would want to live in fall. A warm fall, that is warm enough to still go swimming, but with a few cold days now and again so that I might start a fire and drink hot cocoa.
Knowing that this season would be endless would keep me from disliking it, because I only do that when I know that winter is on the way. If winter will never come, I would be happy forever. :) However, this does pose the question: What of the leaves? Do they remain on the trees all the time? What colors are they? Do they reach their peak of beauty and stay that way? Would we not grow accustomed to seeing it and no longer appreciate the beauty we see around us? Or would they fall off periodically and somehow grow again without becoming springtime?
PS-Bree and Chris are one and the same, neither being a true identity. :)
-
Did I just read that comment correctly??? My dear friend who always emphatically stated her distaste for the fall season now likes it? I've only been gone for 2 months . . . what happened in my absence?
Glad to welcome you as the latest member of "Fall Lovers Anonymous."
:)
~Cara
-
Ok, if we can recall correctly, the reason I dislike fall is because it means that winter is on the way.
Now, hypothetically, winter does not exist, hence removing any cause for distaste of autumn.
It is a beautiful season of the year. Granted, a little dreary come November, but if change in seasons is nonexistent, then November would never be the gloomy rainy month that we know it as.
Therefore, I can be perfectly justified in stating above opinion and yet still retaining my dislike of fall in reality.
:D

Hey Guys, Its been a while since ive last posted so, hey! Um I think I would have to go with my mom and say SPRING!!! Yeah! I love spring!! Spring is so cow! Thats what it is cow(just ask ruining cori). BYE

Willie, do you know how long it took me to realize that "ruining" was actually "Ruining"? I could not figure out what on earth you were trying to say!
-
And what on earth were you doing up at 12:13 this morning?!?
-
Duh! It's, like, totally awesome to stay up all night! Guy's love it!

Once upon a time . . .
|
Lend me your ears and I'll tell you a tale of a young peasant girl and the evil checkbook register. Armed with only her wits and a calculator, can she defeat this evil villain and bring balance back to the bank account?
Or would you prefer to hear the tale of this selfsame girl held prisoner by her wicked stepbrothers Disorder and Chaos deep in the interiors of the Forest of Filing Cabinet? And how, as receipts and statements merge together into one compact file folder, the good Prince Organization emerges from nowhere to save the damsel in distress?
Personally, either one would be an encouragement to me just now. |

Sounds like a case of Leslie's been gone for a couple months and the paperwork has patiently awaited her return home. Don't you just love how it always waits, never taking the hint to just up and leave? Doesn't it know when it's not wanted?
Maybe a trip to Wawa would help the weary damsel. It always worked for me. :)
~Cara
-
Bree's Mom- I don't think I'll take you up on that offer. That sounds like a job for WillieMan! dum-ta-dah! (sorry willie, I couldn't resist.) :)
Cara- A trip to Wawa would chase away all the filing cabinet blues. Unfortunately, the nearest one is a fifteen minute drive. :( 'Course for you it's even longer.
-
-
Yes, we know, do we ever know....
-
Oh, but Jacques doesn't ever encourage this love of Wawa.
*rolls eyes and practically chokes with laughter*
-
-
What that you never encourage it? Did I imply that by saying that you did? Are you saying that there's a note of sarcasm in my tone? Is that what you're saying?!?
-
-
As I recall, Jacques dodn't neccesarily encourage WAWA, but rather wide, red-eyed sleepless nights as a result too much caffeine consumption (spelling?)
-
Why don't you just fill it with hot chocolate instead of coffee and then it won't be the result ot too much caffeine. Just think of the energy you'd have from all that sugar. Why, you could get a lot done that way. :)
-
Only if it's Godiva chocolate!
-
Ooh! If I wasn't craving it before, I surely am now.
-
I know! I still have some from last Christmas that I'm saving for the first snowy day of this year. If I can wait that long!
-
-
Sure! It comes in an airtight cylindrical container that keeps it fresh.
-
Ok, perhaps I should rephrase that.
You rescued it from your siblings all year long?!?

It's a blustery day (outside).
|
I awoke this morning to the sound of rain on my window. The clouds had made my room dark. I had slept until eight thirty since the sun did not come around to wake me. The leaves are all wet. The trees are swaying violently in the wind. Each drop of rain, as it hits the window, does not make its own trail down the pane, but melds together with thousands of other drops to create a melting look, as though the glass has become like wax, dripping down itself.
There are two really great places to be on a day like this. One is curled up beside the fireplace, where the warmth of the blaze chases away the chill of the wind and rain, where you are only affected by the sight of leaves holding onto their branches seemingly by sheer willpower, and where you can only feel the chill by touching the windowpane, cold and hard. This is the place most people seem to choose on a day such as this.
Not me.
The other great place to be, and I think the best place, is down at the other end of our driveway, where the two pine trees stand on either side of the gravel path and shelter you from the biting wind and the sharp slashing of the rain. You can stand there and hear the wind whistling through the tops of the pines. Imagine the sound of a car coming down the road at 50 mph. In the rain. Minus the sound of the motor. It's loud. Constant. Droning. Wonderful. It's the same sound that you hear when you stand between those pine trees.
It's freezing. You are still pelted by a few drops of rain that make their way between the branches. You can still feel the chill in the air. You can see the wetness of the leaves on the other trees. The pine needles are soft, but you don't touch them, because they hold more water among them than any other tree.
It's such a beautiful day. I just love the rain. |

I love the rain too,and have a few favorite places to be when its raining. One is in the very back left corner of our yard, surrounded by pine trees. I especially like it there when the wind is whipping across the field and gathers around me as it is barred by the trees on the other side. Another place is sitting on a rocking chair on the porch at Tri-state, snuggled in my forest green fleece blanket.

Hmm, sounds wonderfully cozy. :)

Picto-Blogging: The Easy Way to Document Life
|
This is James at the Celebration Station in Florida. As you can see, he's all set to win the next race. (He says that he past me twice in the last race.)
This is me sitting at the starting line. I don't know who I am looking at. Probably Dad.
It took several tries for me to get this shot. I stood on the sideline while James drove past. He's waving or something in this photo. Maybe he's doing that "hey dude" thing. :)
James spent lots of time trying to perfect his skill. And would you believe it? Here's a real life situation where he used his physics training.
Me & my cousin hanging out at my grandparents' house the last night of our stay.
I took James outside for some good shots while the trees still had leaves on them. I had to crop this photo to fit it on the blog, but the leaves around him are all reddish orange. Very cool.

Nighttime Musings
|
It's a quarter till seven and I'm ready for bed. I am so tired. And yet, of all the times this week that I've had time and energy to kill, now is the time I pick to blog. Backwards? Not at all. I am simply following the unavoidable characteristics of me.
Music softly curls through the air around me. The warm glow from the fireplace heats the room and keeps one side of me warm. Slouched in my chair and gazing out the window, the only thing visible aside from the reflection of myself, is the porch railing and the house lights of our neighbors across the street. Everything else is dark. The sun has long since set. Outside is ready for rest and repose before the sun shines tomorrow.
I saw the northern lights again tonight. Now that I know what they look like, I can recognize them. I always thought they were colorful, but I have seen them to be white and laser-like. They are beautiful, like a show meant just for me. I called James out to see them. At first, I thought they were just clouds. But as I looked longer, they started to move, just as they did the first time I saw them at NW Center. First, they started as two laser beams shooting across the sky and ending above my house. Then after James came out, I pointed them out to him. They were greater in number then. Four beams stretched out long to reach the sky over the woods beside us. They are so beautiful.
I will look tomorrow to see if they come back. It must be that they are more friendly and sociable during the winter months. I have never seen them in the summer. I didn't even know you could see them in NJ until a few years back when my Uncle Tom was showing them to my mom.
It's so cold outside. You can see your breath when you blow. I always like to blow into the cold air and see it. Small pleasures. They're so . . . well, pleasant. :) There was frost on the ground this morning. Brrr! It made me want to put on my warm fuzzy slippers (no, not the leopard ones, the white fuzzy ones) and curl up with a book, a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. However, as today was Saturday, I had things to do. Cleaning being one of them. Having a woodstove requires that we tolerate a lot of dusting. It seems like we could do it every day. I simply must get to my bedroom soon. When I came home from HQ, I unpacked everything so I could use my suitcases again. Then I had presents for my birthday that I had to find homes for, and then packing to do for Florida. When we came home from Florida, I had more unpacking to do. So there are stacks of shirts and skirts and hats and photos and presents and things all over my room. I have to clean and organize it, but my room is so cold that I've been putting it off. *sigh* I'm going to have to do it soon. I can scarcely walk with all the furniture that's in there now. So having things on the floor and flat surfaces isn't helping matters. |

Well what?

I knew I wasn't going to get away with it much longer. I wanted to put it off. I wanted to wait until I had something interesting to say. I wanted to wait until I felt like doing it, but it happened. Someone posted a complaint and now I have to blog again. *sigh*
So anyway, what do you want me to say? I can't blog if I don't have anything to say. I'm open for questions. Do you want to hear my opinions on world affairs? Or do you just want to hear what I did today? Do you want to read about my ideas on how to properly make a cup of cappuccino? Or would you rather I describe my new hat? What's it to be? |

James and I went to Celebration Station last night with Dad and my uncle, Dave. It was great fun to get on the go-carts and ride around the track for a while. We got there at four and stayed for two and a half hours. I am so sore now from having a steering wheel between my knees. Ouch! It feels like I spent the night lying on a rock.
Some of the kids who were driving were practically sadistic. I'd get up beside them and they'd naturally try to hold their position, but if you got ahead of them, they'd ram right into the side of you, causing the car to spin. Then you'd both be stuck because you'd be facing sideways in front of them with your front end up against the rail and they'd be right up against your side bumper. Neither car being able to go in reverse, you then sit helplessly as other cars whiz past and two guys in red shirts come and try to cross the track without endangering their lives to come to the rescue.
After all that exercise, (Yes, it is plenty of exercise when you are gripping a steering wheel with all you've got to hold on and hope you don't go flying sideways around a turn.) we drove through traffic to my grandparents' house for dinner. They had invited everyone to come, Aunt Dawn, Uncle Tom, Uncle Burt, and everyone else. Chris was supposed to come, but he didn't get back from wherever it is he was in time for dinner.
My cousins Aaron and Abbey were there. Aaron played the harmonica for us. He has some great musical talent. I don't think he reads music, but he sure can play; piano, guitar, whatever. Abbey spent the evening following around "my cousin James." She was shocked to learn that he knew her name, despite the fact that everyone had been calling her name all night. :)
Chris did come over later, after everyone else left. James called his cell to see if he was coming. He stayed and played the guitar for us. He listened to James on the violin, and taught me the B minor chord on the guitar. (And I might add, that is no easy chord. It'll take me a while to get that one down.) I took lots of pictures last night, but I just realized that I don't have any of Christopher. How sad! I am going to have to remedy that. I'll call him later to see if he's busy after work. Dad decided to stay an extra day, so we're here till Saturday. I'm so glad. |

Enjoy fall for me when you return to NJ. I'm still wearing t-shirts here . . .
Please tell Jess I said hello, and give her a big hug for me.
I hope you all have a safe trip home. Talk to you when you return.

James, always the suave gentleman, thoughtfully makes sure that he knows everyone's name before addressing them. Which can really be a shocker to those who don't see him often :-)
Cara: T-SHIRTS!!!! Girl, I guess that I'd better tell you how LUCKY you are! It was FREEZING (as in 30 degree weather) last Friday!
-
richleau: Well, yeah, he knew her name anyway. She is our cousin you know.
Cara: Yeah, I was wearing short sleeves for a while there, and still am now, but it has become necessary to utilize the invention of jackets. :) It's tough work vacationing in Florida. I nearly got sunburn!
-
Um, Leslie? Are you going to blog anytime soon? If not just let me know so I won't check in as often. Thanks!
-
Hmm, that sounded rude, which wasn't my intent. Sorry! I just keep looking for more posts and was disappointed that there isn't any. I realize that you can choose when to blog and when not to - but I rather wish you would.

Vacation Traditions
|
Yesterday I went to church with my grandparents and my brother to my brother-in-law's church. He attends a place very close by their house. They had a get together at their house after the morning service. My aunt and uncle, as well as my parents and grandparents, were there. I was official photographer for the first half of the afternoon, taking pictures either posed or candid as I saw the opportunity arise. :)
After most of the people left, I played cards with CR and his sister, Stephanie, who is visiting for a few days. I taught them how to play canasta. I think I taught Stephanie too well, because after the second game, she beat my score unmercifully. :) Around five o'clock, we were supposed to head over to my aunt's house for dinner. When I got there, Chris, my cousin, was playing basketball with James. Or should I say around James. We moved indoors and Chris showed us his newest guitar, playing a song I had never heard before. Or maybe he was just making it up as he went along, how would I know?
Dinner was great. It reminded me of fellowship dinners at FBF and Saturday nights at the staff center. There were two tables, one with my parents, my aunt and uncle, and the other with James and I, Christopher, CR and Stephanie, my grandma and grandpa. We talked about all kinds of things, from Chris' new car to escalators at the mall. (Had some late experiences with those, right Bree?) It was great fun. I played a game of pool with Stephanie, seeing as she was close to my skill level (extreme beginner) and we didn't have anyone else playing and intimidating us. :)
We talked about movies with my uncle Dave. He told us about this great movie called St. John in Exile. Yeah, the one we gave him. Then he told us about a new one that is just a must-see called Luther. Yeah, the one I bought on Saturday. :) He did tell me about one that I hadn't seen about William Tyndale, but I don't know what it was called. At nine or nine thirty, we started a game of Balderdash. That's always especially fun in my family.
Ok, sometimes family traditions can be a little quirky, sometimes just plain dumb, but this one is great. Every time we come to visit, we spend at least one evening at my aunt's house and stay up as late as we can (reasonably) and play games that make us laugh. Sometimes, we don't even need the games to start the laughter going. It's great. It's one of the things I look forward to. The other is coming up on Thursday.
We're going to Celebration Station to ride the go-carts. Get there at around seven. Buy the tickets and ride the carts until around eleven when they finally kick us out. I so love that place.
Last time we went, we happened to hit a Tuesday night when everything was included for ten bucks. No limit on the arcade games you could play. That was awesome. I remember playing a completely gory game called House of the Dead or something like that with a little boy whose parents had brought him out for his fifth birthday. He was a great little guy and caught on to the two-player strategy extremely fast. It was so cute to see him hold the little gun with both hands and aim it at the screen, and then away again to reload. He stood about two feet from the screen so he could hit the zombie or alien thing he was trying to hit.
Then that same night, James challenged me to a game of ATV racing. So we got on these arcade ATV's and started a race. He hadn't told me how to start the thing, so I sat at the start line for half the race before I figured it out. I watched Chris and Uncle Dave play a police game where they had to stand on a mat and actually duck to miss the flying bullets. The screen would sense where they were standing I guess.
But yeah, that's where we're headed this week sometime. Probably Thursday. Wednesday night at Jess'. Hope to see the Graves family one of the days before we come home. Busy week. |

. . . is probably worth saying again.
I was recently (as in just now) catching up on different friends' blogs when I came across this gem of wisdom from C.S. Hayden. Sometimes my friends amaze me with their musings. It certainly provoked a lot of thought for me. Perhaps it will do the same for you. :)

Running into Old Friends
|
Well, here I am again, blogging about my everydays. Yesterday, Mom took James and I over to Jess's house. We watched movies for most of the morning and then went back to Grandma's to pick her up and go shopping. We were going to go to JoAnn's Fabrics and BabiesRUs, but we ended up only going to the baby store. Bummer. Maybe we'll go other places today. There's a ColdStone and a Starbucks on my mental map now that I know where they are, however, no one else really cares for those places I guess. I'll just have to change that and get them hooked. ;)
It was five thirty before we came back from BabiesRUs. Just enough time to get a pizza and have a reasonable dinner hour. So I rode with Jess and CR across town (or it could've been a couple of towns. how could I know?) to get dinner. We were supposed to go bowling at six thirty, but that didn't happen. It was about eight fifteen before we ever left. Just Dad, James, CR and I went. I didn't bowl. Not only am I really bad at it, but the way different people walk down the lane exposes them to many comments and teasing. :)
I was very glad that we did not come earlier as we'd planned, for as the guys finished out the second game, I noticed two girls in the lane next to us. They looked like ATI people. (The skirts.) Then I glanced up and who should I see walk through the door, but Steve Graves. We used to go to church with his family when we lived here and his daughter Jessica had come up a couple winters ago to spend a few weeks at my home in NJ. :) I thought it odd that he should be there alone, but I figured he must belong to some sort of league or had just come out with another family for some reason. Then I saw Mrs. Graves near the door, and that blonde with her back turned toward me could be none other than Jessica.
I ran up behind her and tickled her sides. She was completely shocked to see me. :) :) :) I was so glad to see her, for I'd been wondering if I might get to visit with her while I was here. After our usual howdys, I asked her if she knew a fellow named Jared Yates, whom I had met in Chicago. I knew he lived here in Lakeland, and I figured if that was so, then Jess must know of him and we would share another common acquaintance.
"Jared Yates? Oh yeah. He's supposed to be here in about two minutes." Disbelief. "You're kidding, right?" "No, he and his brother Kyle are coming tonight." "OMS, my friends told me to say hi to him if I ran into him down here, but I didn't actually think I would."
Jessica is so cool. We almost never talk on the phone anymore. We both excuse each other for it because we're the same as far as laziness or forgetfulness, whichever it is. But we get together, and it's like we just saw each other at church, except that we have lots more news to share. She asked about all my friends at home and was shocked to learn that Tim Horn had stolen his family away to Texas.
"How's, um, the Vision Forum guy doing?" "Vision Forum? Oh, Tim!" "Yeah." "I'm mad at him. He carried his sister off to Texas to live out there." "TEXAS?!?" "Yeah, her whole family went and moved out there." "When did this take place?" "Last September. Right after I went out to HQ." "Aw, man!"
I was surprised to learn that one of the guys I used to know is courting. Especially since that guy was about fifteen when I saw him last. Amazing that we covered all that ground in the two minutes before Jared walked in. His was more of a look of recognition and then disbelief.
"What're you doing here?" "Visiting family. You remember, my sister lives down here." "Oh yeah. How long have you been here?" "Since Saturday." "No, I mean here at the bowling alley?" "Oh, about an hour." "You knew the Graves were here." (I thought he said "the Graves here") "Um yeah. I've known Jess for, like, ever." "So you came with them?" "No, I came with my brother-in-law." "But you knew they were going to be here." "No." "You're kidding?" "No, but I'm very glad we didn't wait until tomorrow to follow him to the bowling alley or I'd have missed seeing all of you."
It took me forever to figure out how in the world we managed to go on the same night when they all almost never bowl. And I haven't been bowling since last year when I came down to visit. And then we delayed our trip because of dinner. If we'd have gone earlier, we'd have left before they got there. Cool how that worked out. I totally have to get together with Jess again before we go. She's supposed to be at a party my sis is giving next week, but I'm not sure if she's really going to make it.
Haven't seen my cousins since I've been down here. I don't expect to see Heather as she is married and I don't really know how often she comes to my grandparents' house. I rather am hoping still to see Chris, but that's a long shot since we've been here nearly a week and I haven't seen him yet. I did get to see my littlest cousin, Abbey, the first night we came. She and my uncle, Tom, were here. Uncle Tom was playing guitar with my grandpa and Abbey was watching a movie. She's getting so tall. She's going to look a lot like her sister, Heather. Their brother Aaron, I have not seen yet either. I am told he is grown quite tall and good looking now. About sixteen or seventeen years old. Goodness, I remember when he was two. So cute! He had blonde hair (still does) and was always twirling it with his left hand as he sucked on the first two fingers of his right hand. Never went anywhere without a backpack. :) Why do all children have to grow up? *sigh*
Anywho, I'd best get going, before I start wondering why I have to grow up and then I'll be in a real fix. ;)
See y'all online sometime. |

Les,
Being at the same bowling alley at the same time as your old friends is pretty incredible. Truth is stranger than fiction.
If you see Jess Graves again, please tell her hello from me. I still remember the fun we all had when she visited you. That seems like ages ago, doesn't it?
Reading about your encounter with Jess reminded me of the fun we all had trying on the dress you had just made. I also remember some girls laughing their heads off while attemping to pose in front of the Christmas tree while she was visiting. It's neat what one blog post will do to bring back happy memories.

Oh heavens! Do you remember what she said about not getting to "meet" your brother? ;)

Just rambling
|
Funny how blogs are. Some people who are great fun all the time write about serious subjects a lot and only once in a while do they write about the fun things they've done that day. Other people write about the stuff they do everyday and keep the serious stuff to themselves. I find that you can't tell a person by their blog entries. People only publish on the web the things they don't mind if the whole world knows. Some people want the world to hear their serious thoughts and don't hold their everyday activities to be worth the notice of others. Other people only feel that their everyday activities will interest others and never post their deep thoughts because they don't know what others will think of those concepts.
Funny how blogs are.
I wish once in a while I could think through enough serious thoughts long enough to make sense of them and then I could blog my serious side as well as my light side.
Not that I can think of any particular serious subject that I want to share with the world just now. |
