Communication Breakdown
Ok, look. I'm sure you all have an easy time of it, just sitting there at your pc reading my posts everyday (or in some cases every week or so), and that's all well and good.

However...

I am suffering from a total lack of home news. I recall in a former post this blog being referred to as a place where people could read about my awfully big adventures, but I don't hear about your's unless I call.

Let's get with the program.

Two-way deal here.

If you're not going to email me, at least stick a note on the blog saying you've been here.

    Darling,

If I remember correctly the last time we talked you were returning my call . . . but, I guess you didn't mean me since I couldn't give you "home news" anyway. :)

    Love you girl!

Well, I gave you all the "home news" there is. Of course, I didn't read your blog yesterday due to aforementioned waiting for the call from your sister. ( No one was allowed to tie up the phone line using the computer!)
Doesn't sound like you have to much time to get lonesome for home news anyway, my dear one.

What a day!
Yesterday was quite a day!

We got a lot done at work and succeeded in starting a friendly war. It's apparently been WBLA against Mr. Vogrin's office for some time, but things have been quiet lately. Until yesterday. I was dared to take a balloon into Jarod's office and break his concentration by popping it. I don't think I startled him, but the look on his face was unforgettable when he turned around to see "Lindsay" with a pin in hand.

That was what started it.

Then came the phone call from Brittany.

She wanted to go to Hinsdale and get stuff for her brother's birthday. (Matt turns seventeen today.) I wanted to go with her because there were some books in at the library I had asked to have put on hold. And so we went. She came to my office promptly at five. We headed to my house so I could change. Then headed to her house so she could change. That was when I checked my cell phone messages. I had put my phone on vibrate at lunch and forgotten to take it off again. I had one message.

Bree and I walked and walked. It took about an hour to get to the library. It was the shortest visit we have made yet. Five minutes it took to pick up the books and spy a George Winston CD in the rack by the counter.

Since it was an hour before we were to be picked up by Laura, we decided to head southward toward the Creamery. Brittany chose the flavor this time. We always split a Gotta Have It, because the Like Its are too much to finish without getting an ice cream headache. She chose vanilla with caramel and Butterfingers. Good stuff. The boy who mixed the ice cream asked us if we were British. ; ) Then so we sat down and I told Brittany about my favorite British actors and actresses. Then she asked if we had a ColdStone where I was from. I said that mostly we had custard stands, but there was a ice cream shop near the mall.

After downing our frozen treat, we headed towards Walgreens, that inevitable store. No matter where in this country you live, there's always a Walgreens nearby. We bought balloons and candy and cake mixings and candles and such like, and when we had exhausted our creativity, we went outside to wait for our ride and plan our strategy.

The plan was this. We'd go to Brittany's house where I'd pick up chocolate chips and cupcake papers. Then she'd make the cake at her house. I'd ride with Laura back to my place and blow up the round balloons. My job was to make the cookies and cupcakes. (It was easier that way because if we had to make multiple trips to carry food, it was easier to hop over to my house than go all the way back to Bree's.) Her job was to blow up all the long, skinny balloons and make swords and hats and animals out of them. Before I had left her house, Grace (who lives with Brittany) had lent me a recipe for CC cookies and offered her services with the animal balloons. Great fun!

So back at the ranch, I opened the door to the house expecting to find someone home. Not so. These girls are workaholics. Alicia came in about a half hour after I had started the cupcakes, but she left for work again before long. After two dozen cupcakes, five dozen cookies, twenty balloons, three cups of tea and a round of George Winston, I was ready for bed. Dead tired. It was eleven o'clock.

Six o'clock came dark and early. I had an hour before I was supposed to meet Bree at the PC. Ironing, showering, eating, grabbing a garbage bag filled with balloons and a plate of cupcakes. I was out the door before anyone else, even Anna. After coming through the first floor door, I tried to orient myself as to where I was. I knew that if I found the center stairwell, I'd be alright. But after taking about ten steps toward said stairs, I realized that the room to my right was where I needed to end up. (Duh.) Ok, so I dropped off the food and went back to the house to get the cookies and a jar of blowpops. : )

On my way back to the PC, I ran into Brittany. We hurriedly decorated the table and set up the balloons and food. I ran hastened to my desk. To print out a sign for the door. It read, This area has been temporarily designated a DESIGNATED AREA. (Mr. Gothard told us we were only allowed to have food in designated areas, so it's been a big joke that our desks/offices are designated areas.) Bree laughed when I taped it to the door.

We were early for staff meeting and Matt was surprised to see that. I told him that I had dared Bree to be there on time and then that I had to be there to make sure she was. : ) He got up to leave about 30 seconds later and I had to think really fast. He must've thought I had lost it, because I followed him to the previously mentioned stairwell and saw him open the door before I insisted on having his immediate attention. It was all I could do to keep him from going downstairs before staff meeting. I even escorted him upstairs to an alternative water cooler so that he needn't bother going all the way downstairs (though it may very well have been closer for all I know). He came back into staff meeting just as it started, but then disappeared again, giving much disconcertion to his sister. She and I both kept looking back every time someone would enter the room to see if he was back yet. I was sure he had gone down to put something away or get something or something that would ruin the surprise.

Not so, for after staff meeting, we followed him out of the room. He made a quick turn to retrieve his water bottle (now full) and Bree and I almost rushed down the stairs to get to the construction room before him. The big problem with that room is that there are windows on all sides but one. I was assigned to take a picture of him when he walked through the door, but I kept seeing him walk past the windows. The lights were off in the room, so I suppose that is why he did not see us. Quite surprised was he. Or at least, he did a good job of acting if he wasn't surprised. Official Photographer, I took shots of him with his balloon hat, sword fighting with Daniel, and a picture of the table and decorations. I'll get them copied for you, B.

Getting to Know Different Folks
Would you believe that I have found a fellow Shakespeare reader? Of all things! And would you believe that I have met someone who knows where Brandon, FL is? Because he's from Lakeland! And you'd never think that I'd find someone who has an aversion to plaid pants! (Yeah right. Who doesn't have an aversion to plaid pants?) You find out amazing things about people when you join them for dinner.

Do you know that the girls and guys in my department have an awful mischief streak? Even though practical jokes are technically against the rules, these brainstorms do not quite fall under the practical joke category. Things like hiding under people's desks to scare the wits out of them, and sneaking up behind someone when their concentrating really hard and popping a balloon? Or better yet, writing Union Jack on someone's office door in soap? (The fellow is extremely patriotic.)

Then some of the discussion topics were enough to make me want to burst out laughing. Last night at dinner, the topic went from guys' fashion, to Barbie dolls, to the French Revolution back around to guys' fashion again! I don't know how the Barbie dolls entered the realm of discussion, but it was not by introduction of the ladies present.

This should be an interesting week if it's started out this way.

With friends at the Northwoods

This is me with some buddies the first weekend I went to Northwoods. Philip is the guy on the end and Amber is the girl on the other end. I can't remember the name of the other girl, because she was only there for the weekend. We had a blast at this picnic with volleyball, hotdogs and a campfire. Great memories!

The way I write, you'd think I like fall.
Fall is in the air! This morning, as I was feeling unwell, I stayed at home in bed. I think this forced action of becoming familiar with my immediate surroundings made me appreciate all the more the walk to the lunchroom, which I was not to be talked out of. And so, when the bells in the tower of the PC began to chime the hour, I made my way along the sidewalk. Little yellow hearts came floating down from the trees as the wind blew rather sharply past me. I must agree with a fellow here, Mike, that the grass is greener in the fall. I don't think it is the rain. I don't think it is the wind or the cold weather. I don't even believe it to be the mind subconciously insisting that the grass is greener simply because I want it to be. I think it really does appear to be a brighter, or rather, a deeper shade in comparison with those bright yellow heart-shaped leaves that litter the ground all around here.

And what should I see upon entering the dining hall, but fried chicken! My total favorite! I piled my plate with my favorite meal and chose a seat among those girls of my acquaintance whom I don't often meet in the office. Rather comical it was to see the table divided in two; the guys on one end and the girls on the other end. I did notice that the conversation centered chiefly around the three or four people near the middle of the table. After much conversation and several announcements, I stood in a nearly empty dining hall listening to Christina tell a comical tale of being arrested in Walmart. I could not stay long, so when she told how she was acquitted of the charge laid at her door, I made my way homeward, stopping long enough to pick up my cell phone before returning to the PC.

Many were the WBLA booklets stacked in my inbox upon arrival. Four booklets to go through! I couldn't believe how much work had been done in my absence. Not that they don't work, but it takes them twice the time to correct a booklet on the computers as it does me with a pen. So then it's a good thing that there are two of them and one of me. :)

At 4:30, Jarod came around announcing in an announcer voice, "It's four thirty on Friday afternoon. Do you know where you should be?" Meaning ATI department meeting. It's a great way to signal the end of the work week. If it wasn't for staff meeting, some people wouldn't go home.

What a fun group of girls!
Last evening after work, I attended Spanish class and learned how to say "y'all" to the President. (Nevermind, it would take forever to explain.) Then, since Brittany actually made it to class this week, and since I was planning to be at her apartment building later in the evening, she walked home with me so I could change and I then walked home with her. We had pink lemonade and pizza chips at her house while we read a book that should, by rights of interest level, be entitled A Brief History of Time. Then seven o'clock rolled around. She was supposed to go putt-putting and Starbucking with another group of girls and I was scheduled for dinner in an apartment two floors above.

Ruthann. I knew I knew her face. For two weeks I've been looking at her thinking,"Surely I have met her somewhere before." But the only other Ruthann I could think of was three or four years younger than me. So when she asked me about my life story, and I related all the places I've lived, and she asked where in Florida, and I said Tampa, and she said she lived in Tampa, I said, "Oh! That's where I know you from!" She said, "Did you work the CI in '99?" (Boy, she's got a good memory!) She had been wondering why I looked so familiar to her. I bet if I sat down and talked long enough with the people around here that look familiar, I'd find out that I've met every single one of them before.

So anyway, Ruthann and Melinda live in a little apartment together and invited us for dinner. Melinda made this scrumptious manicotti, which I am going to learn how to make on Saturday, and Ruthann made caesar salad. Oh it was so delicious! Then afterwards, we had Toffeenut Coffee and ice cream with peach cobbler. (I am so getting the recipe for their cobbler. It is the best stuff I have ever had!) We sat and talked and laughed and sipped and ate and had lots of fun. I so enjoyed getting to know these two girls. Deb is such a hoot! She is so funny, and reminds me of the eldest Miss Vanderhoff in the way that she talks and laughs. Alicia didn't say much and neither did I really, but we greatly contributed to the laughter.

At 9:45, Alicia decided it was time to go, so we said goodbye and piled into her car. Almost as soon as we hit the house, I went to bed. Didn't fall asleep, because Brittany had brought me the soundtrack to Emma to listen to, so I listened to that as I continued to read the story. Then Alicia came in to sit on my bed and chat about music and show me a book she has that has parts for guitar and flute. It is a book of wedding music and it looks really hard, but I think I shall like the challenge. J&D, I've been practicing Alone so I hope you have been too. I want to be able to play it together when I get home.

Well, I'd better go. I came in early today to blog and staff meeting starts soon so I've got to get a move on.

Ha ha! I'll bet that the "y'all" conversation that you had was one of those type of conversations that you can only have at an IBLP/ATII center (whatever their called - I'm drawing a blank). I have to laugh thinking about the ones I was involved in:)

I guess I'd better start practicing alone, so I can do it when we're together ;)

Happy Birthday to Valerie!
Last night after ending a phone conversation with my mom and brother, I stood in the kitchen in my nice warm leopard slippers and my favorite comfy pj's, waiting for the microwave to go off and supply me with hot water for making my favorite beverage. I was all set to go to bed early and catch up on some sleep that I had missed in the morning. However, plans change. Alicia walked in the door and stated that I had to help her make something for the birthday party for Valerie, which had been planned for 10 o'clock the next day. "Oh," I thought. "Well, what should we make?" She started to pull things out of the cupboard, naming them off as she went. "Flour, sugar, salt." She moved to the fridge. "Butter, apples, milk..." Here, I interupted her, for it sounded to me to be the fixings for apple pie. "Oh! What a great idea!" After deciding that tarts would be much more in line with the tea party theme, we fell to work; she on the crust, for I am terrible at them, and I to the apples and spices.

We spent an hour in the kitchen, peeling, slicing, mixing and talking. She brought out her guitar as we waited for the oven timer to go off. Alicia plays the guitar very easily. I guess it is rather unusual to sit at the kitchen table and play any instrument, but she didn't seem to think so.

What should I see upon entering the office this morning but lace and white lights set up in Valerie's office! Everyone seemed to have the idea that chocolate cake was out of line for such an occasion, for among the goodies laid out on the table were cookies, scones, peach cobbler and even a glazed vanilla cake in the shape of a sand castle! (Gotta get one of those pans.)

Last evening, as business hours ended, Elizabeth and I discussed with the two fellows in our department the neccessity of dressing in sage and/or lilac attire for the day's festivities as everyone else had agreed that these were the most Victorian colors we could wear at the office. Jarod and Jared, after a lengthy conversation as to just which shade of purple lilac was most like (wisteria or violet), and thinking these colors too feminine, set out on a quest to find the more masculine choice of bow ties. They came in this morning with matching ones, red with white dots. They looked very festive. :)

Apparently when you work at HQ and have a birthday, you get to choose the way that people sing Happy Birthday to you. Valerie decided she wanted it short and backwards. Of course, being the literalists that we are, we turned around so we each had our back toward her, then knelt down so we were shorter than her and then sang Happy Birthday.

Well, right now I am surrounded by construction workers. They are practically on top of my desk. Indeed, the man here has moved me from one desk to another and they have already had me move furniture, wall hangings and computer keyboards out of their way. I expect to be asked to leave the office at any moment, but as lunch is scheduled soon, this will be no very great trauma. The fellas are fixing the sprinkler system so as to be up to the fire code. As one man goes around pulling apart ceiling tiles and making a mess on the floor, another guy comes along with a vacuum cleaner to make the office smell funny. Elizabeth has already wiped off her desk twice, in addition to the times everyone else comes by to say something and wipe off her desk, looking at her as though it were entirely her fault that her desk was a mess. At least the fellas have one guy assigned to clean up after everyone else. There are three or four guys on our floor alone working on this project today and after having seen the ceiling dust all over the floor, I'd hate to be the one vacuuming and dusting after them.

Random fact of the day
If you mix orange juice and Mountain Dew in equal amounts, and then let it sit for an hour, it thickens up like a smoothie.

(Not to be confused with tasting like a smoothie.)

Whoa! I feel like pulling on the reins to make life slow down a tad. What is it James says? Time is what keeps everything from happening all at once? Not all the time apparently.

Yesterday was a nice relaxing day. I went to church with Rachel Johnson's family at Emmanuel Baptist Church. They had a guest speaker so I didn't really find out much about the way their church normally is. I was going to attend again next week. They are having an "old fashioned" Sunday. Everyone is getting dressed up in old fashioned clothes. The pastor is giving a sermon by D.L. Moody. The service will be aboard a riverboat. I was even going to have Mom send out one of my outfits to wear, but then I was invited to church elsewhere and now I can't decide.

After church, Brittany and I had lunch at Starla's house. They served this really good fruity rice pilaf stuff and a cherry chocolate cupcake thing for dessert. Oh yum! That was good! I didn't stay long. They had somewhere they had to go and I was expecting a call from someone. I went home and Brittany went to her brother's house to get him and go play tennis at the park. I talked on the phone with Mom for nearly two hours that afternoon. Sitting there with a cup of tea, a soft CD and a cross stitch project is my idea of a great day. When five o'clock came around, I said goodbye and rode with the Fredricksons down to the dining hall.

I was scheduled with Anna to make dinner. No big deal, just sandwiches and ice cream. There were only about 50 or so people eating dinner. So we got out the bread and set out the veggie tray and started making lunchmeat rolls, when the phone rang. Anna picked it up. I couldn't really figure out what she was saying. Four loads? Loads of what? Are they delivering food on Sunday? No, not food. Four van loads. Four fifteen passenger vans filled with people from the Families of Promise conference. They're going to be here for dinner. Oh. Wow. We don't have enough food. Send the purchasing guys to the store for more stuff. Another phone call. Eight Romanian mayors? They'll be here too? And we're feeding them sandwiches? Hmm. Hope there's enough food.

So we sent out the guys and fell to cutting more vegetables, rolling more turkey slices, and counting out the buckets of ice cream. Should be alright if the guys get back on time. It seemed like they'd never get here. The staff meeting ended and we wondered if we should put out what food there was and just wait till they arrived to put out the rest? when suddenly, there they were, "lifesavers dressed like ATI guys." We rolled as much roast beef as we could and then washed up. Armed with ice cream scoops, we opened the doors. And in they came. One hundred and twenty people, though I don't think they all made it through the ice cream line.

After dinner, we cleaned up the kitchen and I went to Brittany's apartment to sit on her couch and listen to more relaxing music. Nine o'clock came around and we headed to my house, both of us because we girls can't walk alone after dark. (Afraid of the geese.) So then she called her bro and he walked her home from there. Poor guy. Always having to walk his sister home. But I can't feel sorry for him; it's not like we're keeping him awake or anything. I've heard tales that 12 Pine doesn't shut off lights until around three in the morning. I think I would die after a week like that.

So anyway, that's my Sunday. How was yours?

Saturdays are so relaxing!
Wow! Yesterday, I thought I didn't have anything to do. Guess not! I went to lunch and had dinner setup for the next day. That took three hours! I have never set up for that many people by myself before. There are only a hundred place settings but doing it alone, wiping off all the tables. Putting away the unused silverware and napkins, vacuuming the whole room, setting on new plastic forks and knives and cups, etc. It took forever.

So when I finally got back to the office, I thought I might have it a little slow, having gotten all my work done earlier in the day. Not so. When Mrs. Vogrin found out I had extra time on my hands she had plenty for me to do. Mom, you remember that email that she sent out on the WB loop? Well, I had to organize the replies into one big file. I found out that I can type 55 wpm. Is that fast or slow? I'm thinking it's kind of slow.

Last night, Britt came over and we played Monopoly until nine o'clock. She won and confiscated my thimble. (I really gotta learn how to play this game and win.) She stayed until 10:30 when curfew was up and her brother could take her home. Then this morning, Anna left to go to the mall or somewhere with her friend. And I left to go shopping with the Johnson girls and Brittany. We had lots of fun. Shopped everywhere! Aeropostale, Express, NY Company, Claire's, McDonald's, Sears, all over the place. I bought a pink tee shirt an dsome bobby pins. Then a thimble with the Sears Tower on it. Had fun. Came home. Pumped up a few bike tires and rode to the library where you find me now. I will have to be leaving soon to make it to the staff meeting on time. See y'all later.

Much warmer in the office today!
Yesterday was so long. I couldn't believe the length of time it took to go through all those corrections in the booklets. However, I am wishing presently that I had more to do because today doesn't hold much in the way of work.

Last night, we had house dinner. Alicia was gone again. She's at the Northwoods for Families of Promise, along with half the staff here. Deb had a choir practice scheduled for 7:15, so we had to leave the house almost as soon as we got there. We rode down to the shopping centers and decided on Fuddrucker's for dinner. This is not a place I recommend. Apart from the really strange name, the food, though tasty, is too much to eat in one sitting and costs an amazing amount. The decorations are cool and there is a great variety of foods to choose from, but regardless of these plusses, I think I shall refrain from frequenting this restaurant.

We stopped at Sams Club on the way home. Each girl going her separate way, I soon found my way to the book section. There is not much selection in this department at Sams, so I wandered around until I spied Amber & Anna. Catching up with them, I discovered they were shopping for new pans. Anna claimed to be in need of one particular skillet, and as she reached for the one on the shelf, she suddenly backed away. What caused this sudden retreat? Following her eyes upward, I soon saw the offense. The roof was leaking. How strange. After deciding to make life easier for the sales associates by containing the wayward drops a handy stockpot (which was obviously put on the shelf for the express purpose of obliging the passers-by), we left the pot on the floor and made our way to find Deb.

Deb deposited us at the house and left to make her entrance at church fashionably late. Anna, Amber and I got into the other car and headed to Jewel (grocery store) to pick up Anna's dry cleaning and find an ATM machine. That didn't take long, and so we were soon back at the house.

Amber has an awesome voice. Ok, Derek and James, you remember Chelsea from the Messiah concert? Imagine that voice coming from this girl and you've totally got it. She played the piano for a good long while, singing and asking me to sing too. Anna had left for the PC again, so we were really belting it out. We found a treasure of a hymnal in the bench that had songs like Lamb of God, If My People, Shout to the Lord, I Cannot Tell and How Deep the Father's Love. I am finding a copy for myself somewhere. Oh, but we had fun! We ran out of songs we knew, so we just sang the other ones over and over again. We must've looked quite quirky, there at the piano in our pj's and slippers. It was nine thirty before we stopped, and a few minutes later, Anna walked in. We stayed up till ten thirty discussing important things like hospitals, hot cocoa brands and headache medicine. What a variety of topics, right? But we had to stay up as late as we could because Amber was leaving this morning to go home.

I heard her alarm go off this morning and I reached over to touch my clock and light up the face. 4:00 am. Whoa. I totally hate getting up that early. I rolled over and went back to sleep. At 6:30, my clock woke me up. I bought a new alarm clock when I got here. I no longer wake up to the annoying ERRR-ERRR-ERRR that Nancy Drew wakes up to. It's more of a soft beep-beep-beep. Much subtler, yet just as effective.

Well, I gotta go. It will soon be time to start work and I of course cannot be typing blogs while I am supposed to be checking edits. See ya!

Chills Running Down My Spine
Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is freezing cold at this desk.

It was cold enough outside this morning that I had to grab my lightweight black jacket. It is cold enough inside now that I'm wishing I had a heavier one. I really don't think that it's necessary to have the air conditioning on when people are sitting on their hands to thaw them out after five minutes at a computer keyboard.

And the worst of all of it? I left my EXCEL mug at the house so I don't have anything to make cocoa in and wrap my hands around. I'll definitely have to swing by the house on the way back from lunch to pick it up.

This morning, staff meeting was hysterical. I walked in to see an inflatable palm tree at the front of the room. There was a skit by the Suite 21 girls, but the really funny part was seeing Mr. G. get up on stage after them and try to deliver a serious talk while surrounded by said palm tree, inflatable fish, ice cream cartons and an ironing board with clothes piled atop it. I wished I had my camera. :)

After lunch . . .

Well, it seems to have warmed up in here considerably, so, although I did get my mug from the house, I do not really need it.

It has been a very long day. I've spent a great deal of the day on one WBLA booklet. It was a real mess! It was already marked all over in red ink when I got a hold of it. I was supposed to just answer the questions that the off-site editor wrote on umpteen hundred yellow sticky notes, but that turned into an all day job when I realized that the reason she had so many questions was because someone had changed the text in each week's passages without changing the correlating examples in the rest of the book. So while they were trying to teach about direct objects, there was a paragraph about main subjects. And while they were trying to teach about main subjects, the examples (which they claimed came from the book) had nothing to do with the price of a dozen eggs!

It has indeed been a very long day.

P.S.
Do you know that Brittany and Matt think it's hilarious that I use the word indeed? They kill me. It's like, any time they agree with anything that's being said, or any time they would normally answer "yes", they now say "indeed".

Funny.

Well, the fact that they wouldn't normally do it is funny. Pardon me for thinking it funny that people don't, on a normal basis, talk the way I do.

My office is also freezing cold; some of the women I work with keep not only sweaters, but pairs of fleece gloves in their desks :)

Little House on the . . . well, this isn't exactly a prairie.
Now that I actually have time to do it, I am going to describe to you my little house.

It is a sweet, little beige rancher with a bay window in the front. The driveway to the garage is on the right of the relatively small front yard and is accented by a whimsical little lamppost on the left, from which hangs a pot of white, orange and pink impatiens. The yard is bordered by a two-rail fence in front and on the left, while two tall juniper trees border the right side of the drive. As you tread the path from the driveway to the door, there are hedges to the right up against the house. In between each waist-high bush is a small cluster of impatiens planted in the ground. Alicia keeps these tended and watered when it doesn't rain.

Our front door is brown and without windows. It sticks a little so that you have to shove hard to get it to open. When you have overcome that obstacle, you find yourself in a small foyer. In front of you stands a small low table, on which sits the daily mail, including the newest grocery ads and all the mailings from each church for which you filled out a visitor's card. Above the table is a large, square mirror with a gold-colored frame. A coat closet to the left, which houses everything but coats, including baseball mitts and such similar sports equipment attracts little attention, if any.

First, I will take you to the right. This is the most frequented room in the house, the kitchen. Decorated in cream and brick red, this is a sweet little place to sit and chat with all the girls who live here, and then some, or a cozy place to sit at night with a cup of hot cocoa, coffee or tea. The bay window is curtained with plaid tab top drapes and the sill holds a variety of potted plants. (This is where George lives.) In front of the window is the round table where I have breakfast each morning. A unique way to hold photos is exampled by two jars of black and white beans that sit on the table as centerpieces. The photos are slid between the prongs of two plastic forks, which are thence pushed into their respective bean jars. This is a great way to use up yucky beans, Mom! Along the top of the cupboards is a string of ivy intertwined with white Christmas lights. This would have a great effect at night except that the lights currently do not work.

Our kitchen is complete with all the gadgets a girl could possibly need from a refrigerator and a microwave to a Bosch and a juicer. I believe our house to be the only one with a complete set of matching flatware. The stove is presently pulled away from the wall to make it easy for the maintenance guys to reach the fan above the stove, which is in need of repair. (I have discovered many little things around the house in such condition. The faucet doesn’t give hot water in the kitchen. The front left burner doesn't work on the stove.) We have three ovens, one under the stovetop, and two stacked over each other on the opposite side of the kitchen. An ironing board stands in the corner on the way back to the foyer and the telephone hangs on the wall within easy reach of the table. Across from the telephone is the pantry, where is kept all manner of dry goods from tea bags and sugar to cereal and popcorn.

Coming through the foyer and passing by the front door, we turn left into the living room. Beside you is a cozy fireplace with clear glass bottles arranged on the mantle. The couch to your left is decked with pillows of green which accent the creamy tan color of the couch itself. A large window looks out over the back lawn, draped with sheer curtains. The two comfy chairs in front of the window each have their own benefits, the one being near to the stereo in the corner by the couch and the other being close to the piano in the opposite corner. The piano is a dark gleaming object with a beautifully tuned sound which it emits whenever one of the five residents is inclined to use the instrument. To the left of the piano is the door to Anna's bedroom, which can then lead you to the backyard by an outside entrance. Between the door and the fireplace sits the last piece of furniture, being another of those comfy chairs. The attraction of this chair lies in its close proximity to the bookshelf beside it.

Now as you will remember, I left you standing in the doorway of the living room next to the fireplace. Turn yourself to the right again and walk forward a few steps. There is a white door on your right and a brown door on your left. Behind the white door are the many necessities of life, vacuums, brooms, mops, etc. Behind the brown door is my bedroom. Shove a little, you'll get it open eventually. You have to run your hand along the wall for a little way before you hit the light switch and when you find it, you'll see a little 15 watt bulb overhead in a chandelier. It's the only one in the chandelier that works. The maintenance guys haven't made it to my house yet. As you stand in the doorway, there is a small desk to your right. It holds a black hat, two purses and a set of hot curlers. On the wall over the desk is a large framed picture of a river and lots of flowers. It's pretty, but not something I'd choose for a bedroom. Glancing counter-clockwise along the right wall, (you're still in the entryway) you'll see a set of shelves, which holds all manner of photo frames, books, boxes and such, a set of three drawers, where are kept sweaters, jackets and sewing projects, a closet, and a dresser. Nothing being significantly noteworthy about either the closet or the dresser, I move on around to the table and bed, which are now in front of you. The table holds the lamp that I use most often, partly because it gives off the most light, and partly because it is connected to a switch on the opposite side of the bed. (It's easier to reach than getting up out of bed to turn the light on or off.) My little brown bear is there on my bed to welcome me home every night and keep my from being lonely when I need a hug.

There are three more bedrooms and two bathrooms further down the hall, but as I have not seen them all, the really cannot be described on a blog. There are two pendulum clocks at either end of the hall, neither of which work. The garage is accessible through the last door on the left. Two white cars, belonging to Alicia and Deb, sit here on any given day. To get to the laundry room, you must cross the garage, squeeze around Deb's car and open the door on that side. A small high window fills the room with light during the day.

Our backyard is small, but open to the other yards on our street. A large locust tree shades a worn path to the creek. Many have been the girls who walk this path, be they from our house or the one across the street. Down at the creek, which is filling up beautifully since the rain, is a small footbridge. The poles on either end with holes drilled in them cannot help but hint at a rope rail being formerly in use.

Now you have seen the whole of my home away from home. It is the best picture I can paint without the aid of a digital camera. Perhaps when next I come to HQ, that may be remedied.

Feeling Homesick
One of my housemates, Amber, is leaving for EXCEL on Friday morning. Kind of a let down that I only get to meet her and spend two weeks with her, but to cheer us up, we went with Brittany to Pizza Hut again. Amber didn't get to go last time, and she was simply craving those great breadsticks that they have. Mm-hmm!

So we went out last night. It was great. So relaxing. Working with people in a business atmosphere all the while, you really can't enjoy the friendships that you make, but when you go out shopping or to a restaurant, it becomes a time when girls can be friends instead of coworkers.

My coworkers have departed from the office. Beth Stearn left Saturday to go to the Northwoods for the Families of Promise retreat. Lots of people left with her, but most of them stuck around until today. Elizabeth just came to say goodbye. She left me with a stack of booklets to edit and check typesets on. The office looks so nice and neat without anyone's desk being covered with papers and books. Well, mine is covered but that's because I am still working.

It's so nice to keep a blog. Whenever I get homesick, I go back on my blog and read about all the things I did this summer. It's almost like looking at a scrapbook except that there aren't nearly so many pictures. Last night, I came back to my desk to check email and hit the blogs I haven't seen in a while. I was reading about Lauren's birthday party, the piano recital, the day I spent at the pond with Manda and the day I fetched me a cup of sugar from the Davises. Remember going to Deptford, Danny? That was so fun!

I need to start being descriptive on my posts again, if not for the sake of others, for that of my own.

My Brain is Spinning!!!
This was certainly an interesting day. We have accomplished a great deal of work. I've been through at least five booklets at least one time each. Elizabeth is working overtime so she can take off time to go to the counseling seminar. (She encouraged everyone else to go, so then her supervisor "encouraged" her to go too.) Then there was another course she'd wanted to take, so she's really been working hard today.

Today has not been without it quirks and moments of obvious boredom on the part of some of our coworkers. One fellow is without his secretaries this week, who apparently keep him in check when they're around. He was walking up and down the hallway with a paper bag on his head.

Less than a minute ago, another guy came to our little corner of the building, yelled "Yah-ha!" and swung around a wire cable. When he realized Elizabeth was on the phone, he quieted down to a "Hey, see my new cable?"

I'm starting to wonder what kind of folks I'm going to be hanging around for the next few weeks.

Pizza Hut is Cool!
Last night, Brittany and I went out for dinner. Our original plan was to walk to the library and then come home and order pizza, but that got changed around about seven or eight times before a feasible plan emerged. We ended up walking to the library, but it closed at six and we didn't get there till six-thirty. Bummer. So Brittany's roommate, Jennie, came to pick us up in her car. She had some errands to run, so she dropped us off at Pizza Hut. What a great time! It's not often you can just pick up a friendship with someone to the point of being able to share stories over a meatlover's.

So then today we finally made it to the library and then came home to decorate flipflops that we had gotten while we were out last night. Now they look like fuzzy slippers because we stripped fabric to tie around the straps. They're quite fun to wear. :)

Quotes From This Afternoon
Will you be quiet? We're trying to sleep up here!

We'll just draw a target on the wall so you can practice.

I just gotta tell you girls that that stuff's gonna go straight to your hips.

Yeah! We could all dress up as nuns and you could be the pope!

Where is the maid of honor?

These truly were direct quotes from folks around the office today.

Slowly, I begin to get my base of operations set up here at the office. Home was set up the day I came in. (Had to make it feel like a bedroom or I could never have gotten any sleep.) But I've been bringing in photos for my desk and Hershey kisses to induce people to come and say "hi." It works too, BTW. When anyone has candy or cookies of any sort, word gets around to all three floors before the day is out.

When Beth, Elizabeth and I got in to the office this morning, right after staff meeting, we found that someone had been catching mice in our office. That is to say, they took the computer mice and wrapped them in plastic Walmart bags. A harmless prank, but too quirky to let go. After accusing three separate fellows, each of whom had recent access to Walmart, we finally found the culprit to be one of the construction guys, Matt. He had planted the bags strategically on particular desks to frame his brother, Jarod. Of course, it worked. Jarod was the first one to be suspected. We would never have known the true mastermind if he had not confessed of his own free will. (Claims he was feeling guilty?)

Then about the middle of the day, the construction fellas were running power tools right outside our window. Well, it didn't really bother any of us girls, but it apparently bothered Mr. Vogrin, because he came into our office, climbed up on the windowsill, opened it up and stuck his head out. Then he delivered our first quote, "Will you guys be quiet? We're trying to sleep up here." This sent the girls into peals of laughter. It could be heard all over the floor, and launched the idea for today's blog entry.

Then for a little while, I stood waiting around for Beth and Beth to get to their respective stopping points so that we could all go down to the first floor to help one of the new construction guys, Joel, celebrate his birthday. (English translation: eat cake.)

I am off to the library this evening with Brittany. I'll have to see if they have any books or CD's on Spanish, maybe try to help myself along a little.

The Comma Trauma
Welcome to the WBLA department of IBLP!

This has been a totally hectic week. I know I've talked to most of you on the phone within the past few days, so I will not go into very great detail as to the things that have been keeping me busy.
Friday morning I left with a van full of people to go to the Northwoods where we had a sort of prayer retreat, but the focus was more on a weekend of relaxation than anything else. I did have a good time, getting to know some new friends whom I would probably have never met had I not gone on that weekend trip. For instance, Brittany Antonion and her brother Matt have been nearly constant companions during off-hours here at HQ. Brittany works in the kitchen at the staff center across the street and Matt works in construction on the first floor.

The ride to Northwoods was somewhat dull, for not only did I not know the people well, but they slept most of the way. It was after I arrived that I started to loosen up. Tubing, volleyball, kayaking, campfires, guitars, chocolate chip cookies, 1:30 bedtimes, and comfy couches constituted the next few days. Pastor Doug Small was a great encouragement during the morning and evening sessions. I so wish I had lots of time to tell you all about this weekend. We came home on Tuesday. I rode with Brittany in another van. There was constantly at least three guys lolling upon the back seat, fast asleep. I tried to sleep, but you know how I am. The constant motion of the van keeps me awake. When we got back to the PC, I hefted my thirty-ton suitcase to the house and unpacked. Brittany got bored at her house and came over to keep me company. We had dinner together and waited for the rest of our caravan to arrive home. It was quite dark when she went to her apartment.

Yesterday was intense. As soon as I sat down at my desk, I was assigned WBLA 8A to edit. Now this is not an urgent project as it was only revisions and not actual editing. (You wouldn't believe the difference a comma's position makes in the way people perceive the sentence.) Lunch came around very quickly. I was so hungry! I didn't realize what an effort it is to sit at a desk all day! :) Back at the office, I was provided with a veritable library of books to read so that I could know how to edit the English language in general and WBLA booklets in particular. The two girls I work with, Beth and Beth, have both been preparing for a retreat next week that is being put on for families without fathers. It's called Families of Promise.

After hours, I went to Spanish class. (Yes, this makes my third or fourth course in this same unspeakable language.) (I don't know why I can't seem to pick it up.) An hour in class and I was headed back to my house. We were scheduled for a house dinner, which is the same as a family dinner (where you all sit down at the table and eat together) except that you eat with the people in your house. I was under the impression that someone was ordering pizza, but apparently the plan was to head out to Ruby Tuesday's. Good food. Great company. I learned some important things, like how you are chosen to ask grace. (It's the last person with two thumbs up. Don't ask me why.) Grocery shopping, call to the Davis household, and house devotions. (You got it, just like family devos only these people aren't family, they're house mates.)

This morning I awoke to the sound of the telephone ringing at 6:30. No one answered it at first. Then I got up to get it and as soon as I reached the door, well, I'm sure you can guess. So I got back in bed and it started ringing again. I made it all the way to the phone this time before someone else picked up the extension. Wrong number. Might as well stay awake now.

Staff meeting at 7:45, not your average staff meetings here, folks. This skit was after the fashion of Good Morning America. Just as they were discussing the distractions of life, four of their cell phones went off simultaneously. :) Upstairs to my desk, editing, reading, hershey kisses, lunchtime, phone calls, paperwork and it's time to go home. Hope you've enjoyed this unusually brief version of my week. Please forgive any typos. I can't access the publishing page with CharacterLink. Eh-heh. :)

Flying is so cool!
The world is lovely from up high. It is no wonder that when God saw it, He said "It is good."

This morning as Daddy drove me to the airport, I noticed the shade of the sky. It was beautiful! On one side of the car, it was a deep blue. Sort of grayish, but definitely not to be mistaken for any color but blue. Then as you followed the sky down toward the horizon, it passed through white, then pale, pale yellow, and dark purply pink, back to blue again. Not the bright purply pink seen at sunset, but a soft, hazy sunrise color. Too beautiful!

The horizon is very indistinct. From my window, there looks to be a large city in the distance. The buildings must be very tall indeed to be seen so clearly. The sunlight upon it makes it very bright.

Now as I look at the sky, it's that same deep blue. The ground is spectacular! It took me some time to realize that those dark areas I had taken, for lakes were in reality, not lakes at all, but trees! But they're so far away as to be nearly identical in appearance. The only way to recognize the water is by the reflection of the sunlight.

When I look down on the houses, they appear as small as, well, see this apostophe? ' That's what they look like. And I'd never see them if it wasn't for the way the sun shines on them also.

Oh my soul! That large city? It is indeed no city at all! It is a patch of clouds! How very strange it looked on the horizon to resemble a city!

I spy a nuclear plant below now. We must be getting closer to the ground or else those are really big kettles. Eight or ten of them emitting their clouds sit on the edge of a river, which winds and snakes its way westward with no apparent rhyme or reason until it suddenly turns its course southward where it disappears from sight.

It must be a densely populated city that I am above now. All the highways are like thin spaghetti and the smaller roads are like a grid on a map. While I can see the roads clearly, it's impossible to detect anything like movement along them. How quickly it has passed by!

I feel so very small. What can God think of all my petty troubles? I look out this tiny window on my left and view so much more at once than anything I could see during a whole hour in the car. I can see so much further, such a large expanse of the world and yet this long strip of horizon, however great it appears to my eyes, is miniscule in comparison to God's view. I am never going to see the whole horizon. Sure, if I traveled for the rest of my life, I might see the whole world over. I would have to see it from an airplane, and it would take the rest of my life, but I might see almost all of it. But God, ah! He sees all of it, all the time.

It makes me feel so insignificant. All the people, the relative size of whom, I cannot fathom, living on this vast globe, scurry around so absorbed in pathetically unimportant events and pursuits. What fools we all are to think that things (everything mind you, from clothes and cars, to international affairs and politics) are significant! What complete and utter folly to imagine ourselves important! And in spite of all that, in spite of the fact that I am here with the rest of the world being as selfimportant as anyone, God (who, you remember, sees the world from way high up as He alone can) views me as worthy to partake of His kingdom. Truly an unspeakable gift.

Every time I get on a plane, my thoughts run along this path. I love flying, perhaps for this reason, for having my perspective straightened out, as well as for the opportunity of seeing all this beauty. (Oh my soul! That is a helicopter beneath me! It looks like a little bee buzzing around that way!)

Whoever said that flying through the clouds was like getting lost in a cotton ball was on the right track. Imagine yourself a tiny bug, smaller than an ant. You're on top of a cotton ball. That's where I am, right above Chicago. We're waiting to land. Ok, maybe you don't like the bug idea. Well, imagine a giant, totally white, cashmere sweater. Imagine how soft and fuzzy it is. That's a little closer to what it looks like.

Chicago is a lovely city! Descending beneath the cloud cover, I can see the reflection of the buildings in the still water. It must be even more alluring at night! I'm getting closer to the ground, seeing a school, a baseball diamond, what looks like a shopping center. Those bright blue spots must be swimming pools. I can count six lanes on the highway and make out the big Mac trucks. There's a Denny's and a Motel 6. Now I'm so close I can read the billboards. And suddenly I find myself over the runway. As soon as we touch down, the metal flaps on the wings lift up outside my window and I here a loud rush of air, slowing us down.

And here I am again, back on the ground as a tiny speck.

"I feel so very small. What can God think of all my petty troubles?" ~ Thanks for these words. They are an excellent reminder to me to keep all of life in perspective.

May God bless you during your first night at HQ. (Thinkin' about you, too, Mrs. T.)

This Eagle has landed!
Hi everyone! I am settling into my nice comfy chair at my own desk at HQ. What a day! While I was flying I wrote down an entire blog post to share with you but that will have to wait until another day for I have left the notebook I wrote it in, in my bedroom.

I don't know how many of you have seen the HQ building, but I don't remember it being a place that my friends frequent very often, so I shall describe it to you in as much detail as my limited time will permit.

I have already had the grand tour of the production center (PC) and my office is on the third floor. There are two other girls in the office who both go by the name of Beth. Should make for interesting conversations. My job is offiicially entitled WBLA Content Editor. Everyone seems desperately glad that someone took the position. Makes me wonder a little...

I am living in a little house that I can see from my office window. It has four other girls in it presently, whom I have probably met all of, but who can really know, for I have met so many people today! (James, Daniel says "hi". I also saw Alicia Olsen here somewhere.) I have my own room with a twin size bed, lots of drawers and no hangers. I'm on my way to Walmart later with Beth Pleckham, who is one of my office mates.

I understand myself to be in for an extreme weekend of volleyball, pizza parties and rootbeer floats. I knew this ATI atmosphere was really a facade to hide the fun they all have. One girl is having a birthday today, Julie is her name. Her office partners decorated up her desk with christmas lights, flowers, cookies, ginger ale and all kinds of crazy party stuff. Makes me want to come home for my birthday. I told Beth I was not revealing my birthdate. She thinks it's sometime in November, either the 11th or the 31st. Don't know where she came up with those days.

Time presses. Will run. Love you all.

The ShugaBowl
Sounds like some kind of sports thing, but in reality, the ShugaBowl is just a little hideaway for me, Sugarcube herself, to let loose my thoughts and occasional creativeness.
